Some restaurants attract a large number of patrons, while others can’t attract a fly. Have you wondered why? Well, Vasthu sastra could explain the reasons.
A restaurant consciously arranged according to Vasthu principles is likely to see a steady flow of customers.
It is not based on the restaurateur’s gut feelings but a strategic layout to appease the five elements – ether, fire, water, air and earth.
Ideally, a restaurant’s main entrance should face north or east because these are auspicious directions for the success of a food-related business.
In a north-facing restaurant, the cashier should sit in the north-west quadrant facing north when receiving money from patrons.
In a south or west-facing property, the cashier should occupy the south-west quadrant and face east.
In an east-facing restaurant, the cashier should use the south or north quadrants. Of course, the kitchen’s location is every bit as important as the cashier’s location.
Meals prepared in the correct location tend to taste better – and that, of course, would ensure a regular clientele.
The first choice for the kitchen is the north-west (air) quadrant with chefs facing north when cooking.
The other area is the south-east (fire) quadrant, with chefs facing east when cooking.
If a sub kitchen for frying or preparing satay, fried noodles and grilled dishes is required, its stove/grill/oven should be located in front of the premises in the south-east or north-west.
The following suggests ideal locations for several activities:
- The ideal location for displaying sweets and cakes would be in the north-west. This air quadrant will ensure desserts sell fast.
- Groceries and foodstuffs should be stored in the south, west, or south-west because this should be the heaviest place in the shop.
- The toilets should be located in the south-east, south, west or north-west, the wash basin in the east or north.
- A bowl of water or a fountain can be placed in the north-east quadrant, which is the water corner.
- Tables should be square or rectangular, and a red or maroon tablecloth should be placed on top. This will ensure the customers will sit comfortably and spend some time in the shop.
- For faster customer turnaround, use round tables with a red tablecloth to ensure customers eat quickly and leave the place.
Decorations
On the walls of the restaurant, place images of some of the signature dishes served to lure and induce the appetite of the customers.
If you plan to place mirrors on the wall of the restaurant, display them on the west wall facing east or the south wall facing north.
This will make the space feel larger and give customers a feel-good factor.
As for lighting, use warm or mood lights to create a relaxing atmosphere.
Avoid dark colours on the walls of the restaurant. Use light shades of orange, which is a friendly and welcoming hue.
The waiters and waitresses must not wear black, grey, or blue coloured uniforms. It is recommended that they wear light shades of orange, beige, or cream.
Totally avoid dark colours as they will create suspicion and hostility.
