100 Important Vasthu Tips for a Peaceful Home – By Dr. T. Selva

For thousands of years, Vasthu Sastra has guided the design of homes to promote harmony, prosperity, and well-being. Drawing from decades of experience in Vasthu consultations, Dr T. Selva shares 100 practical tips that homeowners can easily apply to create a balanced living environment.

Roof

  1. The roof should ideally slope toward the north or east. In Vasthu, it is beneficial for rainwater to drain toward the north, northeast, or east, as this allows lighter, positive energies to remain active in the home.
  2. Avoid depressions or water stagnation on the roof. The roof must be properly constructed to prevent rainwater from accumulating, since stagnant water can cause structural and energetic imbalance.
  3. Overhead water tanks should preferably be placed in the southwest. Heavy structures like water tanks are best located in the southwest or west, as it symbolically supports stability in the house.
  4. The northeast part of the roof should remain lighter and open. Avoid placing heavy equipment, large storage items, or structures in the northeast area of the roof.
  5. Keep the roof clean and well-maintained. Broken tiles, cracks, unused items, or clutter on the roof should be avoided, as a well-maintained roof protects both the structure and the home’s harmony.

Wall

The walls of a home are silent witnesses to everything that unfolds within: laughter, prayers, conversations, and even unspoken emotions.

  1. The south and west walls should ideally be thicker and stronger. In Vasthu, the south and west sides of a house should provide stability, so these walls are preferably stronger or slightly thicker than those on the north and east sides.
  2. Avoid cracks or damaged walls. Cracks, dampness, or peeling paint on walls should be repaired quickly, as neglected walls may symbolically reflect obstacles and imbalance in the home.
  3. Use light and soothing colours for interior walls. Soft shades such as white, cream, light yellow, and pastel tones help create a calm, harmonious living environment.
  4. Keep the northeast walls light and uncluttered. Avoid placing heavy cupboards, large shelves, or excessive decorations along the northeast walls to keep the space open and balanced.
  5. Avoid irregular or slanted wall structures. Walls should ideally be straight and well-aligned, as irregular shapes or odd angles can disrupt the house’s natural balance and symmetry.

Flooring

When we step into a home, our first contact is with the floor, which should be inviting and calming.

  1. Natural materials such as marble, granite, stone, and quality tiles are generally preferred because they create a stable, harmonious energy in the home.
  2. Flooring with a matte or soft finish is ideal, as excessively glossy surfaces can create harsh reflections and disturb the calm atmosphere of a living space.
  3. Ensure the flooring level follows proper elevation. In Vasthu, the south and west portions of the house should ideally be slightly higher than the north and east, supporting stability and balance.
  4. Damaged, broken, or uneven flooring may symbolically represent obstacles and instability, so floors should always be properly maintained.
  5. Use consistent flooring patterns for harmony. Keeping the same flooring material or colour flow throughout the house helps create visual balance and a smooth flow of energy.

Main Door (Entrance)

The main door is the gateway through which energy enters the home.

  1. The main entrance should ideally face north, east, south, west, northeast, northwest, or southeast to promote positive energy flow. Avoid placing the main door in the southwest.
  2. Ensure the entrance is well-lit, clean, and clutter-free at all times.
  3. The main door should open inwards and in a clockwise direction to the right.
