To align your home correctly according to Vasthu Sastra, the first and most essential tool you need is a compass.
There is no such thing as a special “Vasthu compass.”
A standard engineering compass is more than sufficient to determine the exact directional alignment of your property.
In fact, it is advisable to avoid relying on smartphone compass applications, as they are often affected by magnetic interference and may not provide accurate readings.
Similarly, using the sunrise to determine the east is unreliable.
The sun does not rise at a fixed point throughout the year—it shifts towards the northern hemisphere for six months and towards the southern hemisphere for the remaining six months.
This natural movement makes it difficult to pinpoint true east based solely on observation.
A compass, however, must be used correctly.
It is a sensitive instrument and can be easily influenced by surrounding factors.
Avoid taking readings near iron objects, electrical appliances, metal gates, grills, or even parked vehicles, as electromagnetic interference can deflect the needle and lead to inaccurate readings.
How to take accurate readings
Stand inside your home or office facing the main entrance door, holding the compass steadily in your hand. To ensure accuracy, take three readings:
- The first reading: one step away from the main door.
- The second reading: three steps away from the main door.
- The third reading: about six steps outside the main door, with the door behind you.
In most cases, these readings should be consistent.
If they vary significantly, it is likely due to interference, and you should repeat the process in a clearer space.
Avoid walking around the entire house with the compass, as this often leads to confusion rather than clarity.
Avoid trying to determine the compass direction for every bedroom in your house as this will be inaccurate.
The compass direction reading should cover the entire property.
Mapping Your Space
Once you have established the correct direction, the next step is to sketch your property layout on paper.
Draw the outline of your floor plan and divide it into 9 equal sections to form a grid.
For example, if your property measures 22 feet in width and 75 feet in length, divide both dimensions by three to create nine equal quadrants.
Label each section according to the eight principal directions:
North, South, East, West, North-East, North-West, South-East, and South-West.
The central square—known as the Brahmasthan—should ideally remain open or free from heavy structures.
This is considered the most delicate energy zone in the home, where the flow of energy is subtle.
Placing heavy objects or functional spaces here may disturb the balance and negatively affect the occupants.
Traditionally, this space is kept open as a courtyard, air well, or natural light passage.
Critical zones to watch
Special attention must be given to two key quadrants: the North-East and the South-West.
The North-East is regarded as the zone where cosmic energy enters the home.
It represents spiritual growth, clarity, and new opportunities.
Obstructions such as toilets, kitchens, or staircases in this area can disrupt this vital inflow of energy.
The South-West, on the other hand, is known as the master quadrant.
It governs stability, authority, and wealth.
This zone should be strong, balanced, and free from disturbances.
Any structural imbalance here may affect the household’s financial and emotional stability.
When the directions are accurately determined and the space is aligned accordingly, the home begins to function not just as a shelter but as a harmonious energy field that supports the well-being, prosperity, and growth of its occupants.Award-winning author Dr. T.
