In Vasthu Sastra, the land beneath a home is never silent.
It communicates through its form, its balance, and most importantly, through its elevation and depression.
To the untrained eye, a slight slope may seem insignificant. But in Vasthu, this subtle contour can influence the flow of energy—prana—that shapes the lives of those who dwell within.
I was once invited to assess a home where the owners were grappling with a series of unsettling challenges.
Their children, once bright and focused, were struggling with their studies.
Financial commitments seemed to outweigh income, and there was a lingering sense of unease in the household.
As I walked through the property, one aspect stood out immediately—the north-east sector was noticeably higher than the rest of the house.
In Vasthu, the north and east are the directions from which beneficial energies are believed to enter.
The north is associated with prosperity and opportunities, while the east symbolises light, growth, and new beginnings.
Together, the north-east becomes the most sacred quadrant—often regarded as the spiritual heart of a home.
It is ideally meant to be open, light, and slightly lower than the other areas, allowing energy to flow in effortlessly and gather gently.
However, in this particular home, the elevated north-east acted like a barrier.
Instead of welcoming energy, it resisted it. This imbalance can manifest in various ways—disruptions in children’s education, financial instability, and even health concerns, especially those linked to the heart and blood circulation.
The house, quite literally, was not aligned to receive.
The correction was not drastic, but it was precise.
Rather than lowering the north-east structurally, we recommended raising the south-west sector by a few inches.
The south-west, in Vasthu, represents stability, control, and grounding.
It is the zone that must carry the greatest weight—both physically and symbolically.
By elevating this quadrant, the natural slope of the house was restored, allowing energy to flow from the higher south-west to the lower north-east in a balanced and harmonious manner.
Over time, the changes within the household were noticeable.
The children regained their focus, financial pressures eased, and the home began to feel calmer and more settled.
While skeptics may question such shifts, those who have experienced the subtle corrections of Vasthu often recognise that when the environment is aligned, life itself begins to flow with less resistance.
This principle of elevation and depression is, in many ways, a reflection of life itself.
Strength must be anchored in the south-west—firm, stable, and unwavering—while the north-east must remain humble, open, and receptive.
When a home embodies this balance, it does more than provide shelter; it becomes a living space that supports clarity, prosperity, and inner peace.
In the end, Vasthu Sastra is not about superstition—it is about sensitivity.
It teaches us to listen to the land, to respect direction, and to understand that even the slightest tilt beneath our feet can influence the direction of our lives.Award-winning author Dr. T.
